Winter 2018 Competition Results

The Winter 2018 edition of the London Photo Show happened at 5th Base Gallery, with the private view on the evening of 30 Nov, and the exhibition open to the public over the weekend of 1 and 2 December.

The standard of entry was as high as ever, and the competition saw entries from around the world and from every genre of photography. As always every single entry was printed and framed by us. We chose a shortlist of 15, and 10 of these were giclee printed at 30x40cm and framed, and 5 finalists were giclee printed 50x70cm and framed. These looked fantastic in the gallery.

The winning image was by Vasile Iacob:

This Romanian river scene by Vasile Iacobe was praised for its other-worldly and painterly quality. It reminded the judges of a Turner painting. The light is sublime, and the scene is timeless. The image only consists of two colours, and that simplicity is part of it’s charm. The tones in the print are amazing. Once it was printed in large format it became clear that it was a strong contender to win the prize and that only became more apparent at the private view where everyone commented on it. It’s difficult to put words to how beautiful the image is, and that’s what makes it so special.

In no particular order, the other four finalists were:

Andreja Grasic for this stunning autumnal image of a stag. Lovely colours and fantastic composition.

Andrew Waller’s superb capture of a stunt motorbike rider is technically brilliant, and is made even more special by the engagement of the rider with the camera.

Shaoyi Zhang created this excellent portrait of a musician. The shape and flow through the image are outstanding and brings a musicality to the shot.

This artistic shot of a tree by Dag Røttereng captured everyones attention. The use of intentional camera movement brings a paintelry quality to the image, which also has beautiful colour tones.

Judging a photography competition is a subjective affair, and there were many potential winners. Let us know what you think in the comments below. READ MORE…
