Dark Horse
Whilst I love all genres, one of my passions is horse photography. Throughout a turbulent childhood I took solace in three things: books, horses and sketching. The latter two combining into a love of drawing horses and, in particular, trying to capture the way they moved and the beauty of their physical form. Whatever was the subject of school Art classes; buildings, portraits or landscapes, I would introduce a horse galloping through the fields or arching their necks to eat much to the puzzlement of my teacher. However, growing up in a Comprehensive School in the Midlands during the 1970s and 80s, a career in Art, especially one so specialised, was not seen as a serious option so I put away my sketch pad and put on a lab coat for a career in technology.
It was not until I picked up a camera in earnest some two decades later that I realised that photography was a perfect combination of art and technology and offered me an outlet for the creativity I had been suppressing. Whilst I found pleasure in photographing almost any subject, I was inevitably drawn to my ongoing love of horses; so much so that I bit the bullet and began a new career as an Equine and Lifestyle Photographer.
Consequently, this work is more than a collection of nice photographs of attractive horses but a physical representation of my childhood dreamworld. Dark Horse refers to the person behind the camera just as much as it does the literal subjects of the study.
