Ania Rolińska is a fine art photographer of Polish origin currently living and working in Scotland.

She came to photography later in her life but embraced it fully as a creative and therapeutic practice. Ania combines photography with other media and elements of performance, and likes using creative processing techniques as well as alternative processes to turn digital images into tangible and unique artefacts.

At the London Photo Show 2024, she presents a series of introspective self-portraits from experimental movement sessions on beaches of the Outer Hebrides. Through these, she explores feminine empowerment, embodiment, and deep self awakening among other things. All the images are printed by hand using a photogravure printing process.

Having loved photography since teenage years, I have always been interested in learning and experimenting with cameras, first of all film and now digital. My first love was black and white and the dark room. Digital photography opened up all sorts of new options including the world of colour. From workshops to videos to time with more skilled photographers, mentors, photo friends, workshops, youtube videos and hours and hours out and about with my camera I’ve been hungry to learn.  Ending full time work some six years ago has meant that I finally have lots of time to give to taking photos, processing, printing, bookmaking and exhibiting. 

Photography is a passion that i nurtured since i was a kid and i was in awe at my father’s photography hobby and capturing any moments of our holidays and trips. I cannot say i have a particular style or follow set themes; i am more of a “lets see if this angle works” or “how about that details and viewpoint?”. If i see something interesting, i stop and take a photo – either with my Nikon or with the IPhone. I am a member of Dorking Camera Club and love to share my photos with my local community here in Dorking, Surrey, a step i took since Lockdown, when a lot of people couldnt get out and i was making the most of the allowed 1 hours outdoor exercise window to bring memories and views of our stunning little area of paradise to the rest of the community.

Virginia Orr is an artist using photography as her medium. She’s come late to her creative practice, only really getting to grips with a lifelong desire to express herself as she turned 60. As a fledgling artist she is currently experimenting and hopes to deepen her practice next year with some formal guidance.

The series of flowers on the cusp of going over are inspired by classical botanical illustrations and the Japanese art and aesthetics of wabi-sabi -a view centred on the acceptance of imperfection and finding beauty in decay. A reflection and interpretation of the ageing process and how it is perceived in Western society. Flowers are shot against a black background isolating the subject creating a sense of drama, highlighting intricate details, textures and the impact of imminent decay.

The series of foliage images seeks to illustrate how artificial light in the dark can transform natural elements into something slightly otherworldly. As night fell, I noticed how artificial light illuminates and highlights features in unexpected ways contrasting sharply with natural darkness. This interplay between artificial light in the darkness and the subject it falls on offers new ways of seeing familiar environments. The unnatural brightness disrupts natural rhythms and expectations and evokes a surreal sometimes cinematic quality that feels disconnected from reality. Nothing in these images was created, I simply captured what I saw.

I am drawn to black as a background, whether natural or created. I like the stark contrast and sometimes dramatic effect they create. Historically, they were used in portraiture to highlight faces and expressions. Over time, their use has expanded to still life and abstract photography, enhancing depth, mystery, and focus, offering and evoking a powerful visual impact.

I print on Hanhemühle Photo Rag paper, no mounts, matt black frames, and no glass. These are all conscious decisions to enhance the unusual and to draw the view into the image.

Hey there! I’m Joe Belial (Jose Luis Monroy Tinoco), a French-Colombian photographer and videographer living in London. My passion lies in black and white photography, especially portraiture, where I strive to capture the essence of my subjects through the timeless lens of monochrome.

Currently, I’m immersed in a special project close to my heart—a dance initiative focused on bringing movement and creativity to kids in underdeveloped areas who lack access to formal dance education. This project, which has been ongoing since 2016, collaborates with professional dancers to conduct workshops for these children, aiming to spark joy and self-expression through dance.

One unique aspect of this endeavor is its visual approach, all captured in striking black and white. It’s a choice that adds a timeless and artistic dimension to the storytelling. I’m excited about the impact this project can make and the moments we can preserve through the lens. We are still in the process of securing funding to expand our reach and impact, and I look forward to seeing how far we can go.

When I manage to translate this into my work, I get a sense of accomplishment that is most fulfilling.

I hope for my photographs to achieve a joyful and profound human connection. These perspectives are nurtured and inspired by the works of the great Elliott Erwitt, Richard Kalvar and Gueorgui Pinkhassov.

Thomas was born in Carlisle and started doing photography at the age of 17. He then went on to study photography at university in Newcastle. Once graduating, Thomas worked in the photojournalism industry for 5 years as a Press Photographer, covering the whole North West of the UK. Throughout his life, Thomas has always had a passion for capturing moments in time through street photography and being able to convey through photos, topics he is interested and fascinated in much better that you could do through words. He enjoys shooting in different locations across Europe, the North of England and in his current location of London, since moving there 3 years ago. Thomas feels his best street photography work comes about from being in busy, hectic and bustling environments.

Seeing and hearing people’s reaction to photographs he’s taken and the different emotion they conjure up, is what continues to fuel the fire in him to keep going out every week with his camera and photograph, whether that be on 35mm film or digital cameras.
